Happy Friday all! I have been thinking a lot lately about sports and how they can bring us some great highs in our life as well as some of the lowest of lows. For example last weekend was a horrendous weekend on the sports front for me. Every single team I pull for in football lost. Now I know what some are thinking…wait you have multiple teams??? Well of course I do. In college I am a diehard N.C. State fan as an alumni of the university and growing up a wolfpack fan I have experienced some heartbreaking losses in my lifetime as many people can recall. Last weekend the curse of Winston Salem held true as we lost to Wake Forrest once again. So that was my first loss of the weekend. On to the NFL and my Fantasy team.
In the NFL I pull for three teams. I like the Detroit Lions because my Father is a true blue Lions fan through and through. He has pulled and stayed true to the Lions through the somewhat golden years of Barry Sanders and the rusted wasted years where the only thing you could count on was a Top 5 pick in the draft. However recently the Lions have began to field a respectable competitive team. They even made the playoffs two years ago. However this past weekend with the absence of Megatron our offense looked stagnant at best and lost to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field; which has been a given since the Lions have not won their since 1992. So that was the second loss of the weekend.
The third loss came as the Seattle Seahawks lost in the last two minutes in Indy versus the Colts. This one stung because if I had to pick one team to have allegiance too it would be the Seahawks. I am a huge Russell Wilson fan. I know shocking because he played at State and he is somewhat undersized. I guess I can relate. However Russell accepts his limits and refuses to let them define him. He works harder than everyone else to overcome his weaknesses. However this past weekend the Seahawks defense was not up to the challenge of stopping the Colts on key plays that resulted in big gains and scores. Not all the blame is on the defense, as the offense must come away with more Touchdowns opposed to Field Goals. Another area that was atrocious was the Seahawks inability to convert on third down.
The last loss came as the San Diego Chargers lost to the Oakland Raiders. I like the Chargers for one reason and that is Philip Rivers. I know he is a hotly debated Quarterback that draws strong opinions of people loving him or people who love to hate him. I must admit I was a little concerned that he would be able to capture the all pro form he had most of his career after two seasons of Turnovers and letdowns. However a new coaching staff has injected new life into Philip and he has posted the second high QB rating behind Peyton Mannning thus far.
So what does all this have to do with sports being a catch 22? Well sports are the only true reality TV show out there. On any given week something insane can happen that will leave people talking about an incredible come from behind win or a ridiculous play that ends up on SportsCenter’s Top 10. The unpredictability of sports is what makes it so appealing or at least in my opinion it is. That’s why I tune in week after week. I am also going to go out on a limb and say that is why you do too. So enjoy and relish the unpredictability that comes from sports. What will happen this weekend that will leave us talking for weeks to come or even years? Will it be a game winning FG as time expires? A one handed catch that leaves us mesmerized? Or will the Jacksonville Jaguars win their first game against the Broncos? Doubtful but I wouldn’t bet against it….
