North Carolina’s state motto is a profound statement that delves deeper in meaning the more it is pondered. Esse quam videri is a latin phrase that translates into, “to be, rather than to seem.” I put this phrase to the test by examining my own life and I must admit that I need to be a better job at being myself in all situations. One of the worst things a person can be in my opinion is a hypocrite, that is saying one thing and doing the opposite. I don’t consider myself a hypocrite per say but I want to make sure that I don’t give anyone that vibe.
As we live each day their are ample opportunities to go against ones beliefs. It seems that the morality lines are in constant flux; however, it can be even more satisfying as one stays true to one’s beliefs. Starting today I want live up to this motto. I am proud that my state; North Carolina adopted such an impactful motto, one that inspires people to be their true selves.
It can be liberating as you make a conscious effort to be yourself. As a society we all have a need to fit in with a certain crowd, but It is better to find a group of people who accept you for who you are. When you can look yourself in the mirror and be completely at peace with who is staring back at you, then you can appreciate life completely. Personally there has always been little things that kinda of nag at me, but recently I have started to move on and stay in the moment. Trust in yourself and embrace what makes you an individual!
Peace can be found each day as we live each day to the fullest. Remember there is always someone watching and you never know what kind of impact you could have on a particular person. A simple hello or smile could make all the difference in someone else’s day. We all have a responsibility to our communities to improve our environment for future generations. Imagine how much better the world would be if we all strived to improve our surroundings each day! If you can be honest with yourself and apply this motto to your life, I promise you that you can have brighter days within your reach. A quick note about honesty is that it can be brutal, but as we are honest with ourselves then we will progress faster than we ever thought.
Esse Quam Videri, “To be, rather than to seem.”
