In it Together

Today we hear countless stories of division and strife; however, we can all become a small part of the solution by putting others first. We are all humans living on this planet together, rarely do our actions not affect someone, be it positively or negatively. It is vital that we consider the consequences of our choices before we act. Self-mastery is a lifelong pursuit that we must prioritize if we are to reach our full potential. What is self-mastery? At its core it is self-control. Some say that it is the ultimate test of our character.

We all have some character traits that are not desirable; some may have a quick temper, negative thoughts, passing judgments, or may just be apathetic. No matter the characteristics that are not desirable we can do a better job at suppressing these traits through self-mastery. We are ultimately responsible for our thoughts and actions; we cannot go to the store and purchase self-control. Many of the negative stories we hear and read about in the news are the direct result of poor self-mastery. These actions come with little thought and regard for the consequences of the action.

I contest that many of the problems in this world could be solved if we all stopped for a second to think about the implications of an action. Think will this bring a positive result? Or will it create a negative environment? If it is the latter, then don’t do it. Remember that consequences do not have to be negative, they can be positive. Our choices and actions are our own; however, they do affect those around us.

Change and self-mastery start with our selves. We need to look within and make a resolution that we are going to better ourselves through discipline and love. The world is in desperate need for individuals to step up and unite one with another. We are all connected by being humans, we all breathe the same air and need to start making the most of our opportunities. I challenge everyone to band together and become the person they want to be. Don’t be afraid if you do not accomplish self-mastery in one leap; here is a hint you cannot do it all at once. Self-mastery is a lifelong pursuit. Try and make the world a better place today than it was yesterday and do your best to leave the world better for future generations. If we do that, then we can find true happiness!
