On VW Island

What began as an innocent trip to take a quick look at a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan ended up being a 4-hour tour. My Mother’s lease on her current car is coming up on its expiration; therefore we decided to get a jump on what is available.

We all looked at the lot, and to our surprise, not a single sales person came out to talk to us. My thinking was well she should at least test drive a car with them being at the lot and from out of town. What is the harm in seeing how it handles? I went inside and asked if someone could help us out, and the receptionist informed me that someone would be with us shortly.

After 30 minutes someone came out and helped us out. We test drove the car, and my mom liked it. Let me cut to the chase…My Mom got the car after some haggling and the dealership meeting their strict terms.

This story appears to be about a car, but it is not. It ended up being a great 4+ hours because I got to hang out with my Wife, Mom, and Dad in a place where we had to entertain ourselves with conversation. We joked about how long it was taking and how whenever my Dad, and I go to a dealership together my mom always ends up with a new car. While my Dad and Mom were negotiating with the Sales Manager, My Wife found a restored 1974 Volkswagen Campervan on the sales floor where we set up camp. Some kids walked by in jealousy of our fresh set up. Inside the campsite, we joked and laughed at our current location.

Once my Dad went to finance to sign the terms of the lease, my Mom, Wife, and I took over the salesman’s office. At this point, we had passed the point of being hungry, and we talked about our surroundings. The VW Island. Appropriately named due to the theme of the dealership, outfitted in surfboards, as well as, paintings of tropical destinations. There was a festive Christmas Tree, and lovely jazz/Christmas music playing.

In short, we all had a great time laughing and talking with one another. I would recommend you get stranded somewhere free of distractions with the people you love every so often; it may surprise you how much fun you will have.
