It can seem that there is an endless supply of negativity and fear in today’s world; however, I contend that there is just as much light and hope. We can all become a light unto the world by having confidence and trust in each other. Too often we may pass judgment on our fellow brothers and sisters and think to one’s self, “they are not worthy of a second chance, why should we help them, they put themselves in their current position.”
Personally, I have been guilty of this type of self-talk. I think everyone has at some point, and that makes us human. We are not perfect, and therefore we have our shortcoming and faults; however, that doesn’t mean we should not strive to be better. It doesn’t say we should not hold ourselves and our fellow human beings to a high standard. But we must help each other reach higher ground, we must not condemn one another when we fall short, and we need to have hope and faith that we can reach a higher standard with help from each other.
Fear cannot be allowed to rule our thoughts and actions. It is better to let love, and hope lead our daily lives. Additionally, love can bring greater light into our eyes and minds. Instead of passing a snap judgment, we should think how can we help? Helping will not only change someone else’s life, but it will change ours as well.
Think back to a moment that you were scared and someone came to your aid. How did that make you feel? Personally, I have had times when I have been in an unknown situation when my wife or family has come to my aid. In those moments I was grateful to have someone else provide light to my dismal state.
There will be times when our light is not as bright as it should be, and that is when we need to lean on others hope and love to cast out darkness. One of the most significant examples of offering light is the example that Jesus Christ provided. He was selfless and continuously strived to uplift and teach his fellow brothers and sisters. He loved those who hated him, he condemned the sin but not the sinner.
We too can look upon people and choose to see them how Jesus Christ sees us, and he sees what we can become, and not what we are currently. This world can become better if we all choose to be a little bit better each day. A little kinder to our fellow global citizens, a little more conscious of how our actions can influence those around us, and ask what we can do for the world and not what the world can do for us.
I know that many little changes can make a significant impact. We are all far more alike than different, and our attitudes and choices can make the world a better place today than it was yesterday, and tomorrow better than it is today. Choose hope and love over fear!
